Net zero and sustainable influence in pharmacy

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) net zero plan
The GPhC is the independent regulator for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy premises in Great Britain.
Square Gain partnered with Archus to undertake a carbon footprint baseline for GPhC using Square Gain’s Carbon Dashboard, and to develop their Strategy and decarbonisation pathway to achieve net zero carbon emissions. GPhC’s commitment extends beyond internal measures, in their regulatory capacity, they can shape the practices of pharmacy professionals and premises as well as exert a positive influence on the broader healthcare sector. To help inform the process, throughout the project Square Gain facilitated engagement sessions with internal and external stakeholders. The strategy focused on two key areas:
- Internal transformation ‘putting our own house in order’ which covered GPhC’s Scope 1,2 and 3 carbon emissions, and;
- Greening our regulatory levers, which aims to ensure that pharmacy understands the risks and opportunities associated with climate change, along with the requirements for adaptation to minimise the impacts.
The GPhC Net Zero Action Plan sets a clear pathway to reach carbon net zero by 2040, and recognising that collective efforts are vital for achieving meaningful and lasting change, GPhC aims to inspire and support sustainable practices across the pharmacy sector.
