Supporting NHS Trusts as healthcare PFI schemes end

As NHS Trusts approach the end of their Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts, they face significant operational, financial, and sustainability challenges. With over 100 healthcare PFI contracts set to expire by 2038, it is critical for NHS organisations to plan effectively to ensure smooth transitions, optimise assets, and align with net zero carbon targets.

The Square Gain team has experience on PFI hospitals since 2003 and the collaborative approach of our experts provides essential support to NHS Trusts in this transition. Our expertise in estates strategy, asset management, and carbon reduction planning ensures that Trusts can align both Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) guidelines and NHS net zero targets. Our Carbon Dashboard software enables real-time tracking of emissions, helping NHS estates reduce their carbon footprint effectively.

The IPA guidelines provide a structured approach to PFI expiry, emphasizing early preparation, asset condition assessments, and risk management. These guidelines recommend Trusts start planning seven years before contract expiry, ensuring they can identify and manage risks associated with ongoing service delivery, upgrade infrastructure, and secure funding for long-term operational success. This is also important for the Special Purpose Companies (SPCs) providing these services.

By engaging early with expert support, NHS Trusts can navigate PFI expiry successfully, ensuring that healthcare estates remain resilient, efficient, and aligned with sustainability goals for the future.  Please contact us to organise an initial meeting.
